Providing students with multiple opportunities to think and act like scientists and make high school science curriculum come alive is the focus of this institute. Teachers will help students view science as a “way of thinking” rather than an accumulation of facts. Participants will deepen their understanding of the theory and implementation of inquiry-based science.
· Goals: · To make science come alive for students · To use inquiry-based science to focus and coordinate the entire secondary school curriculum offerings · To create a common language connecting all science disciplines · Participants Will: o Identify what inquiry is and what it is not o Develop an understanding of the theory of constructivism and its implications for inquiry-based learning o Use inquiry as a means of delivering a rigorous curriculum and engaging instruction o Examine the skills and knowledge needed to be an inquiry –based teacher o Plan inquiry-based lessons to use in today’s classrooms o Discover how inquiry may be used to strengthening thinking skills |
