shifted and evolved.Massachusetts ASCD – Learn, Teach, Lead – {International Flags} Students as Global Citizens By Cindy Crimmin, MASCD President In the mid-20 the century, after two world wars and a space race with the former Soviet Union, public education in the U.S. focused on teaching other languages. At that time, foreign language educators (myself included) recognized that second language education not only enriches one’s personal life, but also enhances one’s ability to connect with individuals of dramatically different customs, cultures, and religions. With the arrival of the 21st century, educators must prepare students to master the requisite skills and competencies for living and working in a globalized world. In this issue of Massachusetts ASCD’s Perspectives, authors define globalization, specify additional global skills and competencies, suggest ways schools can incorporate these skills into new and existing curricula, present narratives and examples of global learning initiatives, and provide valuable resources for accomplishing a truly daunting mission.
