Jerry Goldberg, Teachers21

Classroom Walk-throughs are a powerful tool to gauge the impact of instructional practice on student learning. Teachers can use Walk-throughs to coach each other and inform planning; administrators can use Walk-throughs to stay connected to what teachers and students are doing in the classroom. In this institute learn how to look for observable evidence of teaching practice and learning results to support inquiry and improvement.

Classroom Walk-Throughs
• are non-evaluative
• provide a process that structures questions, observations and professional dialogue in ways that turn inquiry into action
• focus on student learning
• support standards-based professional learning communities

Elements of Classroom Walk-Throughs
• Starting point: Learning expectations
• Student work observed
• Levels of student engagement observed
• Learning environment
• Analysis of data collected
• Reflection with the teacher
