June 26 & 27 Watertown Public Schools 9:00 - 3:30

Ann Koufman-Frederick, PhD, Assistant Superintendent, Watertown Public Schools
Marielle Palombo, Graduate Student, Harvard Graduate School of Education

Why are kids so excited about communicating in writing these days? There is great appeal in the authentic communication and authorship facilitated by new digital communication media. Today teachers have the opportunity to capitalize on that natural appeal in their role of helping students learn how to express themselves effectively in writing. Web 2.0, otherwise known as the Read/Write Web, has much to offer the teaching and learning of writing. This "hybrid" (both face-to-face and online) seminar course will help teachers develop effective learning activities that engage students in interactive writing with online discussions and other web tools. The summer sessions will provide an overview of ways in which strategic instructional use of digital communication media can support the writing process, improve written expression, and promote thinking and understanding of content. Teachers will explore and deepen their understanding of Web 2.0 tools (i.e. TeacherWeb, First Class conferencing, Tapped-In) and begin designing learning activities that employ these tools for their own classrooms. Learning will continue through the summer with online and face-to-face support for curriculum development. Fall sessions will enable participants to refine their curriculum plans as they implement the new activities.

Prerequisites: Facility and open-mindedness with Internet. Must have experience teaching with the web.
